Early History7th-9th century - Namri Songzen unifies Tibet
1244 - Mongolia conquers Tibet 1598 - Sonam Gyatso is the first high lama 1624 - Europeans make contact. THey set up church. The Dalai Lama kicks them out 1724 - Chinese Manchu (Qing) dynasty puts Tibet under chinese rule 1750 - Rebellion against chinese officials is put down by chinese army 1774 - George Bogle investigates for trading opportunities 1793 - China starts choosing the Dalai Lamas 1850s - Russia and Britain fight over Central Asia. 20th Centuary1904 - Dalai Lama flees as Britain forces Tibet to sign a trading agreement
1907 - Britain and Russia both back down and give Tibet to China 1908-09 - China “puts” the Dalai Lama back into power 1912 April - Tibet gains “independence” 1912 - Dalai Lama comes as Chinese troops leave 1913 - Tibet keeps independence by pushing away China and Britain 1949 - Mao Zedong proclaims the founding of the People's Republic of China and threatens Tibet with "liberation". 1950 - Dalai Lama is 15, and China comes back 1951 - Tibet is forced to sign a treaty with China, which basically puts it in China's control Mid-1950s - Armed rebellions as hatred towards China builds 1954 - Dalai Lama talks to Mao, but China doesn't honor the treaty Revolt 1959 March - Uprising in Lhasa. 80,000+ Tibetans flee to India 1963 - Foreign visitors are banned from Tibet again 1966 - The Cultural Revolution leads to the destruction of a large number of monasteries and cultural artifacts. 1971 - Foreign visitors are again allowed to enter the country. Late 1970s - End of Cultural revolution, but still many Chinese people moving into Tibet 1987 - The Dalai Lama wants Tibet to be a place of peace. Wants true self rule. 1988 - China imposes more laws after more revolts 1989 - The Dalai Lama gets the Nobel Peace Prize 1993 - Talks between China and the Dalai Lama break down. |
Modern Day2002 - Contacts between the Dalai Lama and Beijing are resumed.
2008 October - The Dalai Lama losing hope in agreeing with Beijing A meeting of Tibetan exiles in northern India reaffirms support for the Dalai Lama's long-standing policy of seeking autonomy, rather than independence, from China. 2009 January - Chinese authorities detain 81 people and question nearly 6,000 alleged criminals in what the Tibetan government-in-exile called a security crackdown ahead of the March anniversary of the 1959 flight of the Dalai Lama. 2009 August - Following serious ethnic unrest in China's Xinjiang region, the Dalai Lama describes Beijing's policy on ethnic minorities as "a failure". But he also says that the Tibetan issue is a Chinese domestic problem. |
